The above advert is promotional material from controversial hipster brand American Apparel (AA).
AA is notorious for using hyper-sexualized images to promote their products, this is an effective way of reach the target audience of the products, by using the sexualized images of young models this catches the attention of the consumers aged between 16-25; which iss the primary audience and consumer.
In this image we see a female model laid across a plain mattress, the contrast on the image is very high, making a very harsh difference between the soft grey tones of the skin and the black in the clothing, this creates more focus on the product but also represents the contrast the consumer may have by wearing their product, as well as having under-lying tones of sexuality in the image, the text used is very minimalist and basic; which again puts more focus on the model and what she's wearing as appose to focusing on the brand.
The above is a poster promoting high fashion brand Versace, it is a celebrity endorsed advert using A-lister Lady Gaga, this is an effective way of advertising this product as Lady gaga has one of the largest fan followings out of most artists currently relevant, not only that; gaga is known for dressing a little bit mental so the fact the versace products have made her look normal/good represents the concept that it can make anybody good, plus people idolize high figures in the mainstream press and like to conform to the standards set by such figures, so the audience may believe that they're just as good as an a-lister by wearing such products. The lighting used is very soft, the skin tones are cool and so are the blue tones used in on the sofa in the back ground, this is showing that versace is cool and it's calm, its not in your face but you still notice it, discreet. The text is in a bold yellow which is versaces signature colour, in smaller text we see 'lady gaga for' and in larger text there is the word versace written; this shows that despite the fact they're using a celebrity with status as high as lady gaga, the brands name is still priority, the yellow tones representing significance and being bold even if the surroundings are calm.
In comparison both companies have used effective techniques to promote their products; American Apparel using sex to reach their target audience and Versace using celebrity endorsement for promotional value and to get the attention of the consumer, although I personally find the American Apparel advert more effective and attractive than the Versace advert.
The AA advert uses a harsh contrast in black and white; this makes the image eye catching, and the Versace advert uses cool rich tones which almost has an "easy viewing" concept towards it
